About Warkworth Castle
Warkworth is an imposing Norman castle built on a hill overlooking the River Coquet. It has strong historic links with William the Lion who besieged the castle in 1173 and in the 13 th Century Henry II handed it over to Robert Clavering, who is responsible for its two towers and gatehouse, as well as other improvements throughout the building.
Over the centuries the Percy family were intermittent owners of the castle and made some significant improvements, but it finally fell into disrepair and ruin, when the Percy family concentrated on their chosen principal residence, Alnwick Castle |
